2 tectonic quakes jolt Surigao del SurBy Manila Bulletin

BUTUAN CITY – Two mild tectonic earthquakes jolted Surigao del Sur province Saturday morning, February 15.

In its bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a 2.0-magnitude earthquake was registered at 5:10 a.m.

The epicenter was plotted only five kilometers (km) southwest of the town proper of Madrid, Surigao del Sur province.

The tremor had a shallow depth of only seven kms, Philvocs said.

Earlier, 3.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 5:07 a.m. on the same day, the state agency said.

The epicenter was traced 10 kms northwest of the same town and province, it said.

The tremor had a shallow depth of only eight kms, Phivolcs also said, in its bulletin.

No aftershock or tsunami alert was raised by the state agency.

The two tremors were all tectonic in origin and no damage or injury was reported by the agency.

The Surigao del Sur disaster risk reduction and management council there also reported no damage or injury.

Earthquakes are common in the Philippines which sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activities.
