IMPHAL, July 14 -- Meira paibis of Pourabi, Nungoi and Khurai Konsam Leikai today held a sit in protest at the community hall of Khurai Konsam Leikai, demanding that the miscreants who attacked the families of human rights activists must be arrested.
They also demanded to monitor the unchecked issuance of license guns in the State. Speaking to media, spokesperson, Pourabi Meira Paibi, Wahengbam (O) Premila Devi said that meira paibis of Manipur strongly condemn the act of attacking the daughter of a human rights defender on July 4 by miscreants.
She stated that meira paibis also take the role of rights activists and they also can become victims of such gun attacks. Human rights defender, U. Nobokishore and his wife, Sobita Mangsatabam works for delivering justice and rights to the people, she said. Their daughter being attacked means that not only human rights defenders but also their families are at risk, she added.
She also questioned why the state government and authorities are allegedly granting gun licenses without checking their eligibility. Armed youths have opened fire towards the defender's daughter and it was a criminal act against women and children, she stated.
The incident could have been a pre-planned attack and authorities concerned, are responsible for protecting human rights defenders, she said.
She further urged the state government to look into the matter and demanded to arrest the individuals involved in such crime.
